Extended School Year Program

The Extended School Year Program, a special program for special kids, provides both academic and social integration in all activities.  It features the same safe, nurturing environment that students experience at The Calais School throughout the year.

The Extended School Year Program runs for 6 weeks beginning in the first week of July. It is open to all students enrolled at The Calais School as well as students from other programs through an interview process. Participation requires approval by the sending school district’s Child Study Team.

Program activities including snacks, field trips, and in-house presentations are free of cost to students.

Each class is taught by a certified Teacher of Students with Disabilities and an Assistant Teacher. Additional support is provided as required, and includes counselors, as well as the School Nurse.  Students requiring Occupational Therapy are scheduled with a coordinating therapist.

Learning the Basics:   Basic academic subjects of math, reading, language arts and science are integrated into a variety of field trips.  The creation of a journal of daily activities, including essays about the field trips, science projects and math-related exercises, is incorporated into each day’s lessons.  The summer’s culminating activity is focused around a theme project that is presented by each class.  Past themes have included American Heroes, Oceans and Sea Life, The Environment, Fictional Story Characters, and others.

Learning, Fun and Socialization:  Group activities such as bowling, movies, skating, and in-school educational presentations provide each student with wonderful and exciting opportunities to explore, develop and try out their socialization skills in a safe, non-judgmental environment.  They learn academically and socially while having fun.
