Woman’s Day Magazine‘s September 2016 edition features our very own Cali and Ms. Casey Butler (now Mrs. Roerden!). The Back-to-School feature on The Calais School discusses how Cali, our stress-sniffing service dog, helps students with mood or anxiety disorders, ADHD, and autism in the special education school setting.
Each school day, Calais students are greeted “with a sniff and a wagging tail” by Cali, one of the school’s three service dogs–Cali, Cleo, and Sage. Cali joined the school three years ago through a partnership with Merlin’s KIDS, a nonprofit dedicated to providing service dogs for children with special needs, as well as veterans, firefighters, and others who live with PTSD. Cali is specifically trained to detect high levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Cali signals to Casey when a student’s cortisol levels are elevated so they can help the student de-stress with the Calais counseling team.
Please read how eloquently Casey discusses how working with Cali transforms not only her students, but her too:
I’ve been become a better person over the past three years–less judgemental, more loving, more in tune with my feelings and others’. To witness the quiet comfort my students get just sitting with Cali in silence is a lesson in itself. She is the definition of unconditional love.
