The week of May 14th – 20th, 2017 has been designated as “Special Education Week” by NJ Governor Chris Christie. We were thrilled to get a head start celebrating Special Education Week with our partners at ASAH during their Innovations in Special Education celebration last week. Two Calais School students received art awards for their poster contest submissions with the theme “Bright Tomorrow for Today’s Students,” celebrating the promise of positive outcomes for students with disabilities.

More than 16% of New Jersey’s students — 234,000 children ages 3-21 —  are eligible for special education services.  As one of New Jersey’s 180 state-approved private schools for students with disabilities, The Calais School is proud to be one of the many supports available to these children, teens, and their families. At The Calais School, we work in close collaboration with local public schools to serve students whose needs cannot be met in the public school setting. Students with a wide range of disabilities from autism to physical disabilities are eligible for special education services, including private special education services.

Our state association, ASAH, is committed to the concept of “Partnerships for Promising Futures” and has been working in collaboration with the New Jersey School Boards Association for more than 30 years in celebrating Special Education Week. The Calais School, together with other ASAH schools, celebrate this year’s Special Education Week, the achievements of ALL students with disabilities, and commends families for their important role in supporting our efforts.

Each year art teacher Mr. Catalano, creative writing teacher Mrs. Polles, and other Calais staff members nominate students for awards celebrating their unique gifts and talents. Keep checking our blog for more award winners!
