Fine and Performing ArtsThe Arts are an integral part of the Calais curriculum. While the Arts provide numerous opportunities to explore self-expression, perhaps their greatest importance for these special children is that they begin, often for the first time, to realize that it is okay to be different. The arts provide a window through which they view themselves and the world around them. The Fine Art Program allows each student to explore a variety of mediums and materials to maximize their artistic and creative abilities. Clay, watercolor, acrylic paints, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastels are used to expose students to the techniques and applications for these materials in painting, drawing, and sculpture. The exploration of self-expression through these materials is often very freeing to the student. Individual and group hands-on projects help the students with the hidden benefit of learning life and communication skills. The Performing Arts Program offers special opportunities for all students to express themselves both musically and dramatically. In-class music instruction allows students to develop and explore individual talents and tastes with a variety of instruments. Students are exposed to music theory, history, and improvisation, while simultaneously focusing on the lessons of music appreciation. Students are provided the opportunity to participate in various ensembles during the school day. Several percussion ensembles work to develop a collaborative effort and foster the goals of ensemble performance. Percussion ensembles are open to all students. Those interested in the advanced percussion group, "The Percussionists", are given the opportunity to audition. In addition to instrumental instruction, the Senior Chorus is open to all junior and senior students. A newly formed Drama Club provides similar creative opportunities. All Fine and Performing Arts classes are designed to reinforce the academic and behavioral programs at the lower, middle, and upper school grade levels. Instructors work closely with counseling services, and academic teachers to develop cross-curriculum lessons and activities. All students are encouraged to discover the importance of cooperation, team-work, expression and collaborative contributions to the school community.
